Brazil’s Nov. 15 Republic Day falls on a Sunday

Brazil's Republic Proclamation Day falls on a Sunday this year, Nov. 15, so workers on a Monday-to-Friday schedule get no extra day off. The date is listed as a national holiday in Article 1 of Law No. 662 of 1949. The same happened in 2025, when the holiday fell on a Saturday.
No optional day off on Monday
Ordinance MGI No. 11.460 of Dec. 29, 2025, issued by Brazil's Ministry of Management and Innovation (MGI) and published in the Federal Official Gazette (DOU) on Dec. 30, 2025, Section 1, page 59, lists the national holidays and the optional days off ("ponto facultativo") for the federal public administration in 2026. Republic Proclamation Day is on the list of holidays, and the ordinance sets no optional day off for Monday, Nov. 16. Federal offices keep their normal hours that day.
The next long weekend
The next holiday on the calendar is the National Day of Zumbi and Black Awareness, established by Law No. 14.759 of 2023. In 2026 it falls on Friday, Nov. 20, creating a three-day weekend, Friday through Sunday, for people who do not work on Saturdays and Sundays.
Who works on the holiday
Article 2 of Law No. 662 of 1949 allows only absolutely essential private and administrative activities on national holidays. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, that Sunday is generally already the paid weekly rest day provided for in Article 1 of Law No. 605 of 1949. Article 9 of the same law says that in activities where the company's technical requirements make it impossible to stop work on a civil or religious holiday, pay is doubled, unless the employer gives the worker another day off. In retail, Law No. 10.101 of 2000 makes holiday work conditional on authorization in a collective bargaining agreement and on compliance with municipal legislation, under Article 6-A. Collective agreements and individual contracts may set their own terms, and public servants follow the rules of their own government body; the ordinance applies to the federal administration.
States and cities have their own rules
Law No. 9.093 of 1995 lets municipalities declare religious holidays, up to four in number and including Good Friday. It also lets each state set its own principal state holiday (the "data magna") and lets municipalities mark the 100th anniversary (centennial) of their founding. Nov. 15, however, is a national holiday and applies across the country. Whether city offices and stores open and public transit runs is decided locally and can differ from one city to another. Check with your city hall and with the business in question.
For information only. State and municipal holidays vary by location; check local legislation. Basis: the federal laws and official ordinances cited in the Sources.
