Brazil’s Dollar Rate Rises 1.33% to R$ 5.4935 (PTAX)

The U.S. dollar rose against the Brazilian real on Tuesday (Nov. 3), according to Brazil's central bank. The bank's closing PTAX rate, the official reference rate for the dollar, ended the day at R$ 5.4935 on the sell side, up 1.33% from R$ 5.4212 at the last close, on Friday (Oct. 30). Monday (Nov. 2) was All Souls' Day (Finados), a Brazilian holiday, and no bulletin was published, so the comparison is with Friday. The figure appears on the dollar today panel.
The PTAX bulletins
The PTAX is a reference rate that the central bank calculates from daily quotes collected from institutions authorized to trade foreign exchange. It is used as a benchmark in contracts. It is not the rate charged at currency exchange offices or on purchases abroad, which can include a spread and the IOF, Brazil's tax on financial transactions.
The opening bulletin, at 10:04 a.m. (Brasília time), put the sell rate at R$ 5.4898. At 11:06 a.m. it stood at R$ 5.4915, and at 12:02 p.m. at R$ 5.4951. In the last intermediate bulletin, at 1:06 p.m., it reached R$ 5.4976, the highest of the four. The closing rate, also released at 1:06 p.m., is the average of those four bulletins: R$ 5.4935. All figures are sell rates.
On the closing PTAX, the euro ended at R$ 6.1500 on the sell side, up 1.62% from R$ 6.0522 at the previous close. The parity the central bank used in the closing bulletin was 1.1195 dollars per euro.
