How to read the PTAX
PTAX is the reference exchange rate calculated by Brazil's central bank from four polls of financial institutions during the day (one at the open and three intermediate windows). The closing PTAX is the average of those four polls, not the price at the close of trading. It serves as the basis for contracts and reports. It is not the retail rate at currency exchange houses, nor the "tourist dollar" rate that travelers pay for cash, both of which include a spread and IOF (Brazil's tax on foreign-exchange transactions).
