The U.S. dollar fell 0.84% against the Brazilian real on Tuesday (Oct. 20), according to Brazil's central bank. The closing PTAX, the central bank's benchmark rate for contracts, settled at R$ 5.0140 on the selling side, down from R$ 5.0564 on Monday (Oct. 19).

The closing PTAX is the average of four quotes the central bank collects from the market between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Contracts use it as a reference. It is not the rate charged at currency exchange bureaus or on purchases abroad, which can include a spread and the IOF, Brazil's tax on foreign-exchange transactions.

The day's PTAX bulletins

The first bulletin, at 10:05 a.m. Brasília time, put the selling rate at R$ 5.0218. The three that followed all came in lower than the first: R$ 5.0138 at 11:09 a.m., R$ 5.0133 at 12:06 p.m. and R$ 5.0070 at 1:09 p.m. The closing bulletin, also released at 1:09 p.m. and calculated from those four readings, settled at R$ 5.0140.

The euro, which the central bank derives from its parity with the dollar, closed at R$ 5.6317 on the selling side, against R$ 5.6682 the previous day, a drop of 0.64%. The parity in the closing bulletin was 1.1232 dollars per euro.

The dollar over the week and the month

Since Friday (Oct. 16), when the PTAX closed at R$ 5.0826, the dollar has lost 1.35%. The decline is steeper over the month. Compared with the Sept. 30 close of R$ 5.1809, the U.S. currency is down 3.22%.

Other major currencies

By the central bank's reference rates, all 16 currencies RaisLife tracks fell against the real on Tuesday, meaning each one got cheaper. Fifteen of them dropped by 0.2% or more. The Chilean peso was the exception, slipping 0.12%, the smallest move in the group.

The Colombian peso posted the biggest one-day fall, 1.69%, to R$ 0.001574 per peso on the selling side (R$ 1,574 per 1.000 pesos). The Turkish lira followed, down 0.98%, at R$ 0.1011. A caveat applies to the lira: exchange rates in Turkey are unstable, and the central bank's reference rate may differ from the one used in the country.

Over the month, measured from the Sept. 30 close, the Mexican peso has fallen the most among the 16, 5.06%, to R$ 0.2722. The euro is down 4.19% over the period, and the Japanese yen is down 3.79%, at R$ 0.03169 per yen (R$ 3,169 per 100 yen). The full table is on the page for major currencies against the real, which also has pages for the Colombian peso and the Mexican peso. The daily dollar quote is on the dollar today page.
