Brazil's dollar reference rate barely moved on Friday (Oct. 23). According to Brazil's central bank, the closing PTAX rate was R$5.0377 (reais per dollar, selling rate), against R$5.0383 on Thursday (Oct. 22), a change of -0.01%. It was the first decline after two straight gains. The drop over the full week is larger: the rate ends the week 0.88% below the R$5.0826 recorded on the previous Friday (Oct. 16).

The PTAX bulletins

The PTAX is the benchmark exchange rate the central bank calculates from four daily quotes collected from institutions authorized to trade foreign exchange. It is used in contracts and is not the rate charged at currency exchange offices or on purchases abroad, which can include a spread and the IOF (Brazil's tax on financial transactions).

The opening bulletin, at 10:06 a.m. Brasília time, put the selling rate at R$5.0384. At 11:06 a.m. it fell to R$5.0325, the lowest of the day's bulletins, and at 12:11 p.m. it rose to R$5.0419, the highest. The last intermediate bulletin, at 1:07 p.m., showed R$5.0380. The closing rate, calculated as the average of the four bulletins and published at 1:07 p.m., settled at R$5.0377. The gap between the lowest and highest bulletins was R$0.0094, less than one centavo.

The euro moved the same way. By the closing PTAX, the European currency stood at R$5.6422 (selling), down 0.13% from the day before, when it was R$5.6494. The parity the central bank used in the closing bulletin was 1.1200 dollars per euro.

Month and year to date

For the month, measured against the Sept. 30 close (R$5.1809), the PTAX is down 2.76%. For the year, against R$5.5024 on Dec. 31, 2025, the decline is 8.45%. Over the past 90 days, the lowest closing PTAX was on Oct. 6, at R$4.9698, and the highest was on Oct. 2, at R$5.2238; Friday's rate sat closer to the floor than to the ceiling of that range.

Overview of major currencies

Based on the closing selling rates published by the central bank, of the 16 currencies RaisLife tracks, eight rose and eight fell against the real on the day. The biggest gain was the Colombian peso, up 1.20%, at R$0.001599 per Colombian peso, and the biggest drop was the Chilean peso, down 0.78%, at R$0.005069 per Chilean peso. For the month so far, measured against Sept. 30, the Mexican peso is down 5.86%, the Chilean peso 4.70%, the Turkish lira 4.34% and the euro 4.01%; the biggest monthly gain is the Colombian peso's, at 2.57%.

Fuel: what the ANP data shows

The most recent weekly survey from the ANP, Brazil's national oil and fuels regulator, covers Oct. 11 to 17. On the national average, regular gasoline cost R$6.53 per liter (R$6.54 the week before), hydrous ethanol R$4.11 per liter (R$4.14) and S10 diesel R$7.34 per liter (R$7.36). The 13-kg cooking-gas cylinder sold for R$114.73 and natural gas for vehicles (GNV) for R$4.75 per cubic meter. The figures are those published by the ANP. Prices by state and by product are on fuel prices.
